In photogravure, a photograph, in place of handiwork, is used to to make an etching. What appeals to me is the visual ambiguity that is born through the marriage of photographic precision to hand rendered suggestion.
After I'd equipped the studio to make handmade aquatint etchings, I installed an ultraviolet light source in order to make photogravures.
The question in my mind is whether a photogravure is more photograph, or more aquatint etching? That has a bearing on the visual qualities I am interested in emphasizing in the prints.
