Courting Candle

2005

Etching

4.25 in x 6 in

This device once played a part in courting rituals. A father signaled the duration of a suitor's visit by turning the spiral rod that holds the candle in place. When the candle burned down to the rod it went dark, signaling the end. It could be raised, or lowered, depending on the father's assessment of the suitor.
